Wusthof Sandwich Spreader
The Gourmet Spreader by Wusthof has a 5" wide oval blade with serrations along one edge.
I love my Wusthof knives. And I make a lot of sandwiches. So I decided to spring for the Wusthof Gourmet 5" Spreader.
It's a tad pricy at $20, but I knew I'd be getting Wusthof's famous quality. Being made by Wusthof, I knew it would last a lifetime, and really, what's $20 for something that I'll use for the rest of my life? And I really did need something better than my garden-variety kitchen knives to spread my mayo, jam, cream cheese, etc.
The Wusthof spreader combines a serrated edge with a spreader head. The nice wide oval spreader head makes it easy to glop out enough mayo in one scoop, and also makes it easy to slather it around nicely over larger pieces of bread or large bagels. Also, it's long enough to reach the bottom of all but the tallest containers.
The serrated blade means that after I do my spreading and finish assembling the sandwich, I can cut my sandwich without having to get out another knife. It can also cut tomatoes and bagels, so it's a good all-purpose sandwich-making utensil.
It's stamped from high-carbon German steel with a stain-resistant alloy, and it has a polypropylene handle with full tang. It's balanced well and is a pleasure to use. I hand-wash it, because I don't like running any of my quality utensils or knives through the dishwasher.
I had never had a spreader before; I always just made do with my regular table knives. But once I got in the habit of reaching for the spreader instead, it became my "go to" tool for sandwich-making.
This isn't something that's an absolute necessity for those on a tight budget. But if you have a few spare dollars, it's a worthwhile purchase that you'll use nearly every day for the rest of your life. You can get the Wusthof spreader for $20 at Amazon with free shipping, or $15 and $5 shipping. And you can sometimes find it on eBay for a good price, but in general I find that the price at Amazon is better.
